Dr. Bruce Greyson is one of the world's leading medical experts of Near-Death Experiences and Professor Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. Dr. Greyson's interest in NDEs spiked shortly after graduating from medical school, when he treated an unconscious patient in the emergency room who stunned him the next morning with an account of leaving her body. That event challenged his beliefs about the mind and the brain. It ultimately led him on a journey to study NDEs scientifically, leading to more than a hundred publications in medical journals.
Dr. Greyson has co-founded the International Association for Near-Death Studies to support and promote research into these experiences and edited the Journal of Near-Death Studies, the only peer-reviewed journal dedicated to this body of research, for 27 years. He has been on the medical faculty at the University of Michigan and the University of Connecticut and addressed symposia on consciousness at the United Nations and the Dalai Lama's compound in Dharamshala, India. He was elected a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the highest honor bestowed by the organization.
His research over nearly half a century has reported remarkable consistencies across NDE accounts and accuracy of events that unfolded while these individuals were unconscious, leading to the publication of his latest book, After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond.
In this episode of Intersections, Prof. Hitendra Wadhwa has a conversation with Bruce Greyson on the topic “What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond ”.
